Amex FHR vs booking direct vs Virtuoso: which wins in Europe
All three paths often start from the same public rate, but the perks — and sometimes the price — differ.
What each path includes
- FHR: noon check-in & upgrade when available, daily breakfast for two (valued at a minimum of US$60/room/day), a property credit of about US$100, guaranteed 4pm checkout. US Platinum/Centurion only. [Amex Travel – FHR benefits & terms]
- Virtuoso: typically breakfast for two, ~US$100 credit, upgrade and early/late when available (late checkout not guaranteed). Booked through an advisor at no extra fee. [Points Travel Pro – Virtuoso benefits explained]
- Direct: hotel loyalty points and elite benefits; join free programs like LHW Leaders Club for breakfast at member hotels. [LHW – Leaders Club benefits]
Is FHR more expensive?
Sometimes. NerdWallet's analysis found FHR rates averaged 6.3% higher than booking direct [NerdWallet – Is Amex FHR worth it?], while AwardTravelFinder states the nightly rate is the same as direct [AwardTravelFinder – Amex FHR list (Paris)]. Treat it as hotel-by-hotel: always price both.
Worked example (illustrative arithmetic, not a quote)
Assume a hypothetical €1,000/night direct rate for 3 nights (€3,000) — a round number for the math only.
| Direct | FHR at +6.3% | Virtuoso (same as direct) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room cost | €3,000 | €3,189 | €3,000 |
| Breakfast for two | pay yourself | included (min US$60/day) | included |
| Property credit | — | ~US$100 | ~US$100 |
| 4pm checkout | ask | guaranteed | when available |
| Platinum $300 credit | no | yes, if prepaid | no |
Here FHR costs €189 more before credits. With the $300 semi-annual credit applied, FHR wins; without it, Virtuoso delivers similar perks for less. If the FHR rate equals direct, FHR wins outright for Platinum holders.
